Every Day is a Winding Road: Taming the Twists and Turns at the Lake of the Ozarks

Fall Lake of the Ozarks

A 28-year-old man from Illinois was riding his motorcycle, a 2013 Yamaha, on Route A in Camden County last Saturday afternoon when he unexpectedly encountered a slow-moving vehicle near Old Glory Road. To avoid a collision, the rider swerved off of the road to the right side and struck a ditch, causing his bike to overturn. The man, who was wearing a helmet, sustained minor injuries and reportedly sought medical treatment independently following the incident.

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration reported that in 2005, as many as 30% of fatal traffic accidents involved vehicles running off of roadways. The winding roads of the Lake of the Ozarks, while famously scenic and no doubt exciting to navigate by motorcycle, create unique hazards for motorcycle operators and other drivers. Due to the hilly and rocky conditions throughout many parts of the Lake Area, there are sharp turns and steep drop-offs that leave little room for error.

While it might not be possible to completely remove the danger involved in traversing the twisting and sloaping roads of the Lake by motorcycle, there are a number of safety guidelines that riders can follow to decrease the chance of accident. Some safety meaures for driving on hilling and curvy roads include: decreasing speed, staying as close to the center line as possible, decelerating prior to curves, and using headlights even during daylight hours.
